ALLIANCE, Ohio --- Carlow University women's volleyball lost two matches at the University of Mount Union tri-match Saturday afternoon.
The Celtics (5-10) fell, 3-0, to Westminster (Pa.) College (13-9) to start the day and dropped a 3-0 contest to host Mount Union (12-6) in the nightcap.
Rebecca Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) led Carlow with 18 kills and 20 digs on the day. Jorja Sedlar (Brentwood, Pa./PA Leadership Charter School) recorded 10 kills, while Kelsey Sufak (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes H) and Emily Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./River Valley HS) tallied 16 and 11 digs, respectively. Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) contributed 24 assists in the effort.
vs. Westminster: L, 3-0
The Celtics kept it close through the first set, taking advantage of several attacking errors and a service ace from Paige Keller (Liberty Borough, Pa./South Allegheny HS) to trail, 15-13. A kill by the Titans set off an 8-0 run that put Westminster ahead, 23-13, enroute to a 25-14 victory.
Carlow trailed most of the second set until the end. A kill and an ace from Rebecca Hess, and back-to-back kills by Alison Humberston (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands HS) saw the Celtics down, 22-19. A kill by the Titans and two Carlow errors handed Westminster the 25-19 win.
Carlow went on a 6-2 run early to gain an 11-8 advantage in the third set. The Celtics maintained a tenuous hold on the lead, ahead 19-14 midway through the set.
The Titans gathered a 9-0 run to gain a 23-20 lead and took the third set, 25-21.
Ava Ferringer and Liv Trent led Westminster with eight kills apiece. Shelby Rambo added seven blocks, and Morgan O'Brien and Trent combined for 27 digs on the day.
vs. Mount Union: L, 3-0
The Raiders held Carlow to single digit kills in each set of the sweep.
Mount Union jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first set and went on a 7-0 run to end the game, 25-12.
The Celtics led the second set, 3-2, before a 5-0 run handed the Raiders the lead. Mount Union steadily pulled away to win the second set, 25-14.
Although Carlow strung together a few smalls runs in the third set, Mount Union came away with the 25-18 win.
Alexis Meyer led the Raiders with nine kills. Heaven Bartell added 18 digs, and Ava Bolen contributed five blocks.
The Celtics travel to Penn State Fayette for a 7 p.m. match Oct. 8.
