Men’s Basketball comes up short against league-leading Alfred State

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University men's basketball lost a tough 84-76 AMCC game to Alfred State College at Donahue Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (8-7 overall) improved to 6-2 in conference play while the Celtics (3-12 overall) fell to 1-7.

Byron Gaskins led Carlow with 26 points, five assists and three steals. Riley Comforti added 13 points and five assists, while Galen Waters contributed 10 points in the effort.

The teams traded leads throughout the beginning of the first half before Alfred State gained an advantage midway through.

Alfred State led Carlow by eight, but a Griffin Ruhlman free throw, a trey by Waters and a layup from Jimmy Giannetta found the Celtics trailing by two. The Pioneers took a 48-41 lead into halftime.

Carlow kept it close through the beginning of the second half before Alfred State went on a 15-3 run that spanned a little over five minutes to lead, 73-57. The Celtics answered with a 12-4 run of their own to trail by eight with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.

Five of the Pioneers' final points came from foul shots as the Celtics attempted to regain possession, but time ran out before Carlow could mount a comeback.

Alfred State shot 52.4 percent (33 for 63) from the field with nine treys and outrebounded the Celtics, 40-35. Carlow scored 12 points off 13 Alfred State turnovers and outscored the Pioneers 19-7 off the bench. Alfred State outscored Carlow 44-22 in the paint and 20-10 in second chance points.

Cody Schneider recorded a double-double with a game-high 36 points and 13 rebounds. Three other Pioneers tallied double figures in the win.
