Men’s Basketball falls to Mount Aloysius in AMCC matchup

Byron Gaskins (Woodbridge, Va./Christ Chapel Academy) led Carlow with 15 points, four steals and three assists. Nehemiah Brazil (Pittsburgh, Pa./Nazareth Prep HS) added 13 points, five assists and a steal, and Clayton Cook (Brookville, Pa./Brookville Area HS) contributed 11 points and four blocks. Jordan Cannon (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East/West Virginia Wesleyan) pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out four assists with two steals in the effort. The Celtics were notably without Riley Comforti on the floor this game.
The Mounties (5-8, 3-3 AMCC) jumped out to a 23-7 lead to start the game, holding the Celtics (2-10, 1-3 AMCC) scoreless for over three minutes before Jimmy Giannetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Saint Joseph HS) added four points, and Cook landed a layup after a steal to put Carlow behind 10.
Carlow trailed 27-15, and both teams suffered through a four minute scoring draught before a layup from Adnan Sbai (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro Area HS/Seton Hill University) broke the stalemate at 6:43. Two last-second free throws by Gaskins saw the Celtics down seven at the half.
Mount Aloysius went on a 12-6 run over the course of four minutes in the second half to take a 50-39 lead. Carlow kept the game within 10 points throughout much of the half, but the Mounties outscored the Celtics 12-8 through the final five minutes of action to secure the win.
In an otherwise evenly matched game, it came down to the foul line, where Mount Aloysius converted 90.5 percent (19 for 21) compared to Carlow's 50 percent (8 for 16). The Mounties outrebounded the Celtics 49-33 on the day. Carlow scored 20 points off 18 Mountie turnovers, and Mount Aloysius outscored Carlow 17-7 off the bench.
De'Von Haggans led the Mounties with a game-high 20 points. Will Hagwood recorded a double-double 17 points with a game-high 14 boards, and two other players contributed 12 points apiece in the win.
Carlow hosts Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m. AMCC game Jan. 15.
