Men’s Volleyball swept in Senior Day doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University men's volleyball fell in both games of a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus University Friday.

Prior to the game, the Celtics honored seniors Hunter DeStefano and Russ Cyprowski.

Game 1: L, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-16)

The Battlers (9-13) made quick work of the Celtics (0-16) in the first game of the day.

Cyprowski led Carlow with five kills, while DeStefano and Colin Wiegand added four apiece.

The Celtics kept it close through the first 10, but Alderson Broaddus pulled away to lead, 13-7.

Back-to-back kills from Cyprowski cut the Battlers' lead to 13-9, but three kills and an ace gave Alderson Broaddus a 17-10 advantage.

With Carlow trailing, 20-14, the Battlers pulled away to 24-15. An error kept the Celtics in the game, but Alderson Broaddus ended the first set with a kill.

The Battlers jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but the Celtics kept it close throughout the beginning of the set.

Alderson Broaddus steadily pulled away to lead, 20-14, with two kills and a handful of Carlow attacking errors ending the game in favor of the Battlers, 25-14.

Carlow started off with the advantage in the third set, but Alderson Broaddus quickly tied the game and overtook the Celtics.

The Battlers went on a 6-0 run to lead, 14-6, and – despite a few miscues – did not allow Carlow a chance for a comeback the remainder of the set.

Jaelin Gray and Loic Nanchen combined for 24 of the Battlers' 41 kills. Nanchen tallied three of Alder Broaddus' seven service aces in the game.

The Battlers hit .376 in the match.

Game 2: L, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 26-24)

The Celtics fared somewhat better in the second game, keeping it close in the second set and taking the game to a win-by-two situation in the third.

Wiegand led the team with eight kills, while Cyprowski and Will Piccolino added seven and six kills respectively.

DeStefano came up with two big blocks in the effort.

The Battlers jumped out to a 5-1 lead en route to a 24-17 first set win.

Carlow got out to a lead in the second set, but both teams tied the score several times at the start.

Trailing 10-9, Alderson Broaddus hi back-to-back kills, and the Celtics committed three errors in a row to give the Battlers a 13-10 advantage.

Carlow hovered around one to two points behind the Battlers the remainder of the game. Ahead 23-21, Alderson Broaddus ended the game with back-to-back kills from Gray.

The Celtics rallied in the third set, leading 8-5 before Alderson Broaddus tied the game.

Behind 15-12, a Battlers service error and kills from Wiegand and Coulter Chaffee tied the game, 15-all.

Both teams tied the score five more times through the set.

An attack error after a called Carlow timeout put Alderson Broaddus ahead, 23-20, but three errors in a row and kill from Piccolino gave Carlow a 24-23 lead.

The Celtics were unable to seal the deal and force a fourth set, with a kill and two errors ending the game in favor of the Battlers.

Gray and Nanchen combined for 28 of the Battlers' 44 kills.

The Celtics hit the road to face Penn State Behrend March 29.
