Hobart sweeps Men’s Volleyball to conclude two-day tournament

GENEVA, N.Y. --- Carlow University men's volleyball concluded its trip to New York with a 3-0 loss to tournament host Hobart College Saturday afternoon.

The Statesmen (5-1) defeated the Celtics 25-16, 25-21 and 26-24. Hobart tallied 11 aces and held Carlow (0-3) to single digit kills on the day.

Russ Cyprowski and Will Piccolino recorded five kills apiece.

Both teams tied the score early in the first set before the Statesmen gained a 10-6 lead. An 8-3 run put Hobart ahead, 18-9, en route to the 25-16 win.

Carlow jumped out to an early advantage in the second set before Hobart tied the score, 6-6. The Statesmen gained a 7-6 lead and stayed just out of reach of the Celtics through the remainder of the set to win, 25-21.

Carlow fared better in the third set, taking the game to a win-by-two situation. Both teams tied the score 11 times throughout the set until the very end. A kill from Ryan Callahan gave Carlow its first lead of the set, 23-22. A Hobart kill tied it up, but a service error afforded the Celtics a 24-23 advantage before another Statesmen kill tied the game at 24-all. Back-to-back kills from Hobart's Noah DeLong ended the set and match in favor of the Statesmen.

Anthony Zontini and Daniel Sappia led Hobart with 12 kills apiece.

Carlow returns to action with its home-opener against Mount St. Joseph Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. inside St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center.
