Men’s Volleyball battles against Geneva in home opener

The Golden Tornadoes (4-5) swept the Celtics (0-3), 25-16, 25-15 and 25-16.
Luke Campana (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led Carlow with seven kills and three blocks on the night. Gavin McLain (Acworth, Ga./North Paulding HS) contributed six kills, and Angelo Fernandez (Williamsport, Pa./St. John Neumann Regional Academy) picked up four digs. Ryan Callahan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area HS) added 12 assists in the effort.
Carlow trailed by two in the first set before an error set off a 6-0 run for Geneva that handed them a 15-6 advantage. Down 22-11, the Celtics outscored Geneva, 5-2, but Andrew Ubinger landed the final kill for the Golden Tornadoes to win the first set, 25-16.
A Geneva service error in the second set allowed Carlow to tie the game, 6-6. The Golden Tornadoes outscored the Celtics 10-4 to take a 16-10 lead before a kill from Campana and two Geneva errors in a row saw Carlow down three.
The Celtics kept it close, but a Carlow attack error forced the side out, and the Golden Tornadoes landed four aces in a row, culminating in a Carlow attack error that ended the second set in their favor, 25-15.
Carlow started off strong in the third set before Geneva scored five unanswered points to lead, 11-5. A Geneva service error handed the ball back to the Celtics, who outscored the Golden Tornadoes, 7-3, to trail by one.
A kill from Daniel Spear catalyzed a 7-1 run that had Geneva leading, 21-14. A service error and a kill from McLain accounted for Carlow's final two points of the set as the Golden Tornadoes won the third set , 25-16.
Geneva hit .329 on the night and tallied 16 service aces.
Ubinger led the Golden Tornadoes with a game-high 12 kills and eight digs. Evan Puhl added 10 kills, and Spear recorded six aces in the win.
The Celtics travel to St. Vincent College for a 7 p.m. match tomorrow.
