Women's Basketball falters in first quarter against Ohio Christian

PITTSBURGH --- In a battle to see which team would score its first River States Conference victory of the season, Ohio Christian University women's basketball came out on top, defeating Carlow University, 66-54, Tuesday night.

PITTSBURGH --- In a battle to see which team would score its first River States Conference victory of the season, Ohio Christian University women's basketball came out on top, defeating Carlow University, 66-54, Tuesday night.

The Celtics dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the RSC while the Trailblazers improved to 2-7 and 1-2 in the conference.

Carlow fell behind early, struggling to land a shot and trailing 24-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Ohio Christian's Ashley DeWeese dropped 17 of her eventual game-leading 31 points in the first quarter alone. Carlow held her to single digits the remainder of the game, but the damage was already done.

DeWeese sank six treys on the night.

The Celtics returned the favor in the second quarter, cutting the Trailblazers' lead to six after going on a 13-0 run to end the half behind, 33-27.

Both teams scored 14 points each as Ohio Christian held onto its six-point leading heading into the final quarter.

The Trailblazers out-scored the Celtics, 19-13, to take home the win in the final frame.

Sydney Carr led Carlow with 18 points and three assists.

Megan Ost scored a double-double with 15 points and 15 boards, and Emiley Hillgartner picked up five steals.

Carlow out-rebounded the Trailblazers, 47-42, and forced 23 Ohio Christian turnovers.

Both teams scored 19 points each off turnovers.

The Celtics host Point Park University for an RSC City Game Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
