Women’s Basketball tied for fifth in AMCC Coaches’ Preseason Poll

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. --- Carlow University women's basketball was chosen to finish tied fifth in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll, the league announced Nov. 2.

The Celtics concluded their final season in the NAIA 5-22 overall last year, averaging 63 points and 42.9 rebounds per game.

Carlow shot 34 percent from the field, 25.8 percent from beyond the arc and 71.3 percent from the foul line last season.

The Celtics return almost all their starters, including Sydney Carr, who led the team with an average 14 points per game last season. Carr also led the team with an average 3.4 assists and was second on the team only to Megan Ost with an average six rebounds per game.

Emiley Hillgartner heads into her sophomore season after ending 2022-23 second on the team with an average 12.8 points and 2.4 assists per game. Hillgartner and Carr played in all 27 games for the Celtics.

Head Coach David Gordon returns after a season as the interim head coach last year. Gordon was a long-time assistant coach with the men's basketball program prior to assuming the women's head coaching role.

Penn State Behrend was tabbed by league coaches to finish at the top of the women's basketball standings in 2023-24. The Lions will be looking for their first conference title since 2004. Three-time defending champion La Roche University is expected to finish second with Penn State Altoona rounding out the top three.

Penn State Behrend junior guard Rachel Majewski was named the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year. Majewski was an AMCC all-conference first team and All-ECAC second team selection a season ago. She helped the Lions advance to the AMCC Championship game and earn a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
