Slow start stifles Women’s Basketball in home-opener against Penn State Behrend

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's basketball hosted Penn State Behrend for its home- and AMCC-opener Wednesday night inside Donahue Pavilion.

The Lions (2-5, 1-0 AMCC) defeated the Celtics (0-3, 0-1 AMCC), 71-51, after a big first quarter lead.

Shaelyn Clark shot 6 for 6 from the foul line to lead Carlow with 12 points, while Sydney Carr added 11 points, three blocks and two assists.

Elena Butler picked up seven steals and sank two of Carlow's three treys on the night, and Jada Bass added seven rebounds and two assists.

Behrend went on a 13-2 run to start the game, leading by 10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lions outscored the Celtics, 20-11, in the second quarter to take a 19-point advantage into halftime.

Behrend tacked on another 17 in the third while holding Carlow to 11 points yet again, but the Celtics attempted a late rally in the fourth.

Clark scored half of her points in the fourth quarter as Carlow outscored Behrend, 22-17, but it was not enough to bridge the gap the Lions built up in the first half.

The Celtics shot 73.7 percent (14 for 19) from the foul line and outscored the Lions, 16-11, off the bench.

Behrend outrebounded the Celtics, 57-48, and scored 44 points in the paint to Carlow's 18.

Rachel Majewski tallied a game-high 18 points, and two other Behrend starters contributed double-figures in the win.

Carlow hosts Wells (N.Y.) College for a 2 p.m. AMCC game Dec. 2.
