Women’s Basketball narrowly defeated by Waynesburg in overtime road game

The Celtics (1-2) outscored the Yellow Jackets (3-0), 20-7, in the third quarter.
Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led the Celtics with 19 points, four steals and an assist on the night. Shaelyn Clark (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) added 14 points, a game-high six steals, four assists and eight rebounds, while Emiley Hillgartner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) contributed 13 points. Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) sank three treys and scored 11 points, and Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown H) added 11 points, two assists and a steal off the bench. Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) pulled down 12 rebounds in the effort.
Carlow trailed 39-31 at halftime before the pivotal third quarter. An offensive rebound and a putback by Clark set off a 7-2 run for the Celtics, trailing 41-40. Another layup from Clark and one from Stinnette tied the game at 46-all with under three minutes remaining in the quarter. Clark hit another bucket, and a three-pointer from Carr put Carlow ahead 51-46 heading into the fourth.
The Celtics led almost the entire fourth quarter. A Waynesburg jump shot and a layup with three minutes left in the quarter tied the game at 62-all, as both teams traded leads until the very end. Carr hit another trey to put the Celtics up, 69-68, and a free throw from Clark gave Carlow a 70-68 lead with 22 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, the Jackets hit a jumper with seven seconds on the clock to tie the game at 70-all and force overtime.
Carlow led, 76-72, but the Jackets quickly tied the game once again. Waynesburg sank two foul shots to lead, 78-77, with less than 30 seconds left to play, and two more saw the Jackets ahead, 80-77, with four seconds on the clock. The Celtics called a timeout, and Carr drew a foul on a three-point attempt with two seconds remaining. She hit two to cut Waynesburg's advantage to one before the Jackets called a timeout. Carr missed the final free throw, and although Carlow fouled to regain possession, the Celtics simply ran out of time.
Carlow scored 23 points off 20 Waynesburg turnovers and outscored the Jackets, 38-36, in the paint. Waynesburg hit 11 treys and held a narrow 54-52 rebound margin over the Celtics. The Jackets outscored Carlow 44-13 off the bench.
Kalista Friday scored a game-high 32 points off the bench for the Jackets, and Kara McFadden added 14 points, four assists and two steals.
The Celtics host Franciscan (Ohio) University for a 2 p.m. game at Donahue Pavilion tomorrow.
