Carr scores 1,000th career point in Women’s Basketball win over Franciscan
PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's basketball earned a decisive 74-55 win over Franciscan University at Donahue Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) scored her 1,000th career point with a foul shot four seconds into the second quarter. Head Coach Dave Gordon called a 30-second timeout to present Carr with a ball and a plaque from the team to recognize her for the monumental achievement. She is one of nine players in recent Carlow history to reach the milestone.
She did not stop there – Carr went 5 for 8 from beyond the arc to score a game-high 24 points. She dished out six assists and picked up five steals and eight rebounds.
Emiley Hillgartner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) added 14 points and five assists, while Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) contributed 10 points.
The Celtics (2-2) outscored the Barons (0-3), 20-11, in the first quarter behind three of Carr's five treys. Franciscan went on a 9-1 run through the first three minutes of the second quarter to cut Carlow's advantage to one point, but the Celtics responded with a 16-2 run to take a 15-point lead into halftime.
The first half deficit proved too much for the Barons to overcome, as Carlow pushed its advantage to 26 points in the fourth quarter. First year guard Lexi Berta (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) sank her first collegiate shot with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics scored 30 fast break points, outrebounded the Barons, 53-42, and outscored Franciscan 12-2 off the bench.
Maria McCallen led the Barons with 16 points. Two other players contributed double figures, and Jazzlyn Melnyk tallied 10 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals in the effort.
Carlow travels to NCAA DII West Virginia Wesleyan University for a 5:30 p.m. game Monday.
