Mount Aloysius hands Women’s Basketball first conference loss of the season

Turnovers proved to be costly, as the Mounties (8-6, 3-3 AMCC) scored 29 points off 25 Carlow (5-6, 3-1 AMCC) turnovers on the day.
Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led the Celtics with 16 points, three assists and two steals. Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown HS) added 10 points, three assists and three blocks, and Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) pulled down 10 boards in the effort. Shaelyn Clark (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) picked up five steals and dished out three assists.
Carlow jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, holding the Mounties scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes. Mount Aloysius countered with a 10-2 run the next three minutes to gain the lead. Trailing 13-9, a three-pointer from Gia Rosensteel (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem HS) cut the Mounties lead to one, and both teams hit one free throw apiece, as Carlow trailed 14-13 heading into the second quarter.
A trey from Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) gave Carlow the lead right off the bat, but Mount Aloysius tied the game at 16-all with a layup on the next possession. Both teams traded leads and tied the score several times throughout the second quarter, with the Celtics ahead 34-32 at intermission.
The third quarter played out in much the same way, with Mount Aloysius gaining a marginal lead after outscoring Carlow 17-11 in the quarter to lead, 49-45.
The Mounties pushed their advantage to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Celtics continued to battle. A three-pointer from Stinnette cut Mount Aloysius' lead to 60-56 with four minutes remaining in regulation. Mount Aloysius scored its next five points at the foul line, ahead 65-56 with 1:22 on the board. Carr sank a three-pointer and was fouled on the shot, nailing her and-one free throw to put the Celtics within five points and a minute left in the game.
The Mounties hit a layup and two free throws to pull ahead and prevented Carlow from scoring as time ticked off the clock.
Although the Celtics' defense held the Mounties to just one three-pointer, Mount Aloysius shot marginally better overall from the field on the day – 43.1 percent (25 for 58) to Carlow's 34.4 percent (21 for 61). Carlow outrebounded Mount Aloysius 45-36, and the Mounties outscored the Celtics 42-24 in the paint.
Angelina Kohlwaies led the Mounties with a game-high 18 points, seven assists, four steals and two blocks on the day. Molly Kosmack added a double-double 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Carlow travels to Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m. AMCC game Jan. 15.
