The AMCC Game of the Week did not disappoint, as it was a physical game up until the very end between the Celtics (7-8, 5-3 AMCC) and the Redhawks (13-4, 7-1 AMCC).
Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led Carlow with 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist. The Celtics – notably without Emari Stinnette the past four games – also lost Nina Cano in the second half to an undisclosed injury.
The Celtics went ahead 6-2 to start the game before back-to-back buckets put La Roche in the lead. Cano landed a layup to tie the game at 8-all, but the Redhawks outscored Carlow 8-4 to end the first quarter ahead, 16-12.
A three-pointer from Hillgartner two minutes into the second quarter cut La Roche's lead to one, and a jumper by Carr put the Celtics up by one. The Redhawks went on a 10-1 run over the course of five minutes to gain a 26-18 advantage with 2:42 left in the half. The Celtics held La Roche scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, and baskets from Hillgartner and Cano saw Carlow trailing by four at halftime.
Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) sank a three-pointer seconds into the third quarter to cut La Roche's lead to one, but the Redhawks pulled away once again before Carr hit a trey that saw the Celtics trailing, 31-30. La Roche stretched a 9-2 run over the span of six-and-a-half minutes to lead, 40-32, with 1:22 left in the quarter. Shaelyn Clark (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) sank a three to cut the lead to five, and a free throw gave the Redhawks a six-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
A jumper from Clark four minutes in saw the Celtics down three, but foul shots gave La Roche a five-point lead once again. The Redhawks outscored Carlow 14-5 in the final six minutes of regulation to secure the win.
La Roche outrebounded the Celtics 41-38 and scored 17 points off 16 Carlow turnovers on the night. The Redhawks outscored Carlow 38-8 in the paint and 25-2 off the bench.
Dasja Anderson – who scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter – led the Redhawks with 19 points off the bench. Jazmine Dunn tallied 16 points, and Makayla Abram recorded a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds.
