PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's basketball pulled away from Penn State Altoona in the second half to secure a 65-56 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win Thursday night.
The game between the Celtics (11-9, 9-4 AMCC) and the Lions (10-12, 7-6 AMCC) was a makeup game from the night before that was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.
Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led the Celtics with a game-high, double-double 19 points and 16 rebounds. She also dished out six assists. Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) added a double-double of her own with 18 points and 13 boards, and Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown HS) returned from the injured reserve list to record her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Lions jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the game until Carlow crept back with a three-pointer from Stinnette and a foul shot by Cano that tied the game at 7-all. Penn State Altoona held onto a precarious lead through the remainder of the first quarter and led Carlow, 27-23, at the half.
A three-pointer by Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) in the third set off a 13-2 run for the Celtics that spanned almost the entire quarter, giving Carlow a 36-29 lead with under a minute left in the quarter. Back-to-back treys saw the Lions trailing by three heading into the fourth.
A jumper cut Carlow's advantage to one point early on, and Penn State Altoona eventually tied the score at 44-44. The Celtics scored nine unanswered points that gave them a little breathing room, and Carlow kept the game far enough out of reach the remainder of regulation.
Carlow outrebounded Penn State Altoona 55-43 and outscored them 26-22 in the paint and 15-9 off the bench on the night.
Madison Rusnica led the Lions with 16 points and Avana Sayles added 12 rebounds in the effort.
Carlow travels to Mount Aloysius College for a 4 p.m. AMCC game Feb. 15.
