Women’s Basketball falters in fourth quarter at Mount Aloysius

The Celtics (11-10, 9-5 AMCC) struggled on the boards against the Mounties (14-9, 9-5 AMCC), who outrebounded Carlow 45-28 and outscored the Celtics 30-22 in the paint.
The first time these two teams met in January, Mount Aloysius handed Carlow its first AMCC loss of the season after scoring 29 points off 25 turnovers to land a 69-60 victory.
Emiley Hillgartner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led the Celtics with 18 points. Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) added 16 points, three steals and two assists, while Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) contributed 15 points and three assists. Shaelyn Clark (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) tallied 11 points, four assists and two steals, and Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown HS) added 10 points off the bench.
The teams battled through 10 ties and 12 leads changes on the afternoon.
Mount Aloysius outscored Carlow 10-2 to end the first quarter with a 20-12 advantage. Both teams scored 18 points apiece in the second quarter, affording the Mounties a 38-30 lead at halftime.
A three-pointer from Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) to start the third quarter jump-started a 24-9 run for the Celtics that spanned almost the entire quarter, gave them the lead and culminated in a trey by Josie Horne (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central HS) at 1:50. A last-second jumper by Hillgartner saw the Celtics ahead 58-49 heading into the fourth.
The Mounties tied the game twice, and Carlow tied it again at 66-all with 4:37 left in regulation. Mount Aloysius erupted to outscore Carlow 21-12 in the final four minutes, including two treys and nine points at the foul line, to secure the win.
Carlow scored 13 points off 15 Mount Aloysius turnovers, and the Mounties outscored Carlow 17-15 off the bench.
Molly Richards and Molly Kosmack combined to score over half of the Mounties' points. Richards led the team with a game-high 26 points, and Kosmack added a double-double 21 points and 18 rebounds. Two other players contributed double figures in the win.
The Celtics travel to La Roche University for a 7 p.m. AMCC game Feb. 19.
