Slow second half stifles Women’s Basketball at La Roche

Despite several ties and lead changes throughout the game, the Redhawks (19-5, 13-2 AMCC) pulled ahead in the second half to earn the win over the Celtics (11-11, 9-6 AMCC).
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville HS/Grove City College) led Carlow with a double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Aubrey (Bristol, Tenn./Sullivan East HS) added 13 points and three steals, and Emiley Hillgartner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) contributed 11 points, four assists and three steals. Shaelyn Clark (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) recorded five assists and three steals, and Sydney Carr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) tallied five assists in the effort.
Carlow jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the game before La Roche tied the score at 7-all midway through the first quarter. The Celtics pulled ahead, and La Roche tied the game once again before taking a marginal 13-12 lead at the four-minute mark. Neither team scored for almost three minutes until a jumper by the Redhawks broke the stalemate to put them ahead, 15-12.
A three-pointer from Carr tied the game, and both teams traded leads, with the Celtics coming out of the quarter up by one.
Carlow scored seven unanswered points to start the second quarter, maintaining a marginal lead until under a minute remaining in the half. Trailing 36-35, a jumper from Alexis Robinson handed the Redhawks a 37-36 lead as the teams headed into halftime.
Back-to-back layups put the Celtics up three at the start of the third quarter before a three-pointer set off a 10-0 run for the Redhawks that spanned over four-and-a-half minutes. Carlow broke the scoring draught with two treys from Hillgartner that quickly cut La Roche's lead to four. The Redhawks outscored the Celtics 8-3 through the rest of the quarter to lead by nine heading into the fourth.
A three-pointer from Emari Stinnette (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown HS) cut La Roche's advantage to six early in the fourth, but the Redhawks outscored Carlow 16-5 through the remainder of the game to secure the win.
The Celtics scored 18 points off 21 La Roche turnovers on the night. The Redhawks dominated inside the box, outrebounding Carlow 47-27 and outscoring the Celtics 42-24 in the paint. La Roche held a 19-6 scoring advantage off the bench.
Robison scored five of La Roche's seven three-pointers for a game-high 26 points. Dasja Anderson added a double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds, while two other players contributed 10 points apiece.
The Celtics host Alfred State College for a 4 p.m. AMCC game Saturday, Feb. 22. It is Senior Day, and Carlow will recognize its five seniors prior to tip-off.
