PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's soccer lost 2-0 to Fifth Ave. foe Chatham University at Highmark Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Szekely (North Huntington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) stopped a barrage of 10 shots in the first half to keep the Celtics (0-3-1) on level ground as the teams remained deadlocked at zero heading into halftime.
The Cougars (3-2) broke the stalemate in the 57th minute when Ainsley Smith passed into the middle and found Elizabeth Gallup six yards out.
Elizabeth Knight (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) stopped five shots, and the Carlow defense closed ranks to keep the Cougars off the board for another 32 minutes before Chatham scored its second goal at 89'. A blocked shot and commotion inside the box gave Halle Marsalis the shot.
Chatham outshot Carlow 34-1 without allowing the Celtics a single shot on goal. The Cougars took advantage of 10 corner kicks on the afternoon.
Carlow returns to the pitch with a 6:30 p.m. match against Waynesburg University at Highmark Stadium Sept. 17.
