Women’s Soccer succumbs to Penn State Altoona after lengthy delay

PITTSBURGH --- After an hour and a half lightning delay, Carlow University women's soccer fell, 5-0, to visiting Penn State Altoona at Highmark Stadium Wednesday night.

The Lions (3-8-2, 3-2-1 AMCC) scored as many goals in the match against the Celtics (3-10-1, 2-4 AMCC) as they had all season.

Altoona scored its first three goals of the match within the span of six minutes. Commotion in front of the net allowed Rachel Rutkowski to strike first with a goal at 18', followed in quick succession with a goal by Emilee Roman that Kylei Martin sent in from a tight angle. Altoona scored its third goal at 24'.

A free kick from Amara Battista (South Park, Pa./South Park HS/CCAC) in the 29th minute was the best chance the Celtics saw in the first half, trailing 3-0 heading into halftime.

The Celtics held the Lions scoreless for over 26 minutes – including a defensive save by Meghan McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart HS) on a header at 47'– before Altoona landed its fourth goal in the 50th minute.

Mallorie Smith tallied her second goal of the match at 54' to give Altoona the 5-0 advantage.

Anna Gribik (Clarion, Pa./Clarion Area HS) put a nice shot on goal at 71', but Altoona keeper Adeline Baustert maintained her clean sheet with the save.

The Lions placed several good shots on goal toward the end of the match, yet none reached the back of the net for the remainder of the game.

Elizabeth Knight (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) was saddled with the loss and split time in net with Lyndsey Szekely (North Huntington, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic). The pair recorded 12 saves in the effort.

Altoona outshot the Celtics 27-9 (18-4 on goal) and held a 6-1 corner kick advantage.

Carlow travels to Penn State Behrend for a 3:30 p.m. match Oct. 26.
