PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's tennis won its third match in a row with a 5-2 victory over La Roche University at Alpha Tennis & Fitness Sunday afternoon.
This is the first time in recent history the Celtics (3-4, 2-2 AMCC) have won three matches in a season.
The victory was extra sweet as Carlow honored seniors Caitlin McCarthy (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton HS) and Jensen Stolitza (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong HS) prior to the match.
It was a hard-earned win for the Celtics as the first three singles matches all went to a tiebreak set.
Stolitza won her No. 3 singles match after losing the first set, 6-4. She won the next set and the tiebreak, 6-4 and 10-4 to earn the point.
Julia Piatt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks HS) dropped the No. 1 singles spot after winning the first set, 6-3. She lost the second set, 6-4, and fell short, 10-7, in the tiebreak set.
McCarthy lost the first set in No. 2 singles, 6-1, before rallying to win the second set, 7-5. La Roche's Danielle Dominick took the tiebreak set, 10-5.
Piatt and McCarthy each played for almost two-and-a-half hours straight between doubles and singles matches.
Sofia Hernandez (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) swept her No. 4 singles match, 6-0 and 6-0, and the Celtics won the final two matches by default due to a truncated La Roche roster.
The Celtics earned the doubles point behind a 6-1 win from Stolitza and Hernadez in the No. 2 spot and a default at No. 3 doubles.
The Celtics travel to Penn State Behrend for a 1 p.m. AMCC match Oct. 5.
