Women’s Volleyball ranked seventh in AMCC Coaches’ Preseason Poll

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. --- Carlow University women's volleyball placed seventh of 10 teams in its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) preseason poll, the league announced Aug. 22.

This year is Carlow's inaugural season as members of the AMCC, with the Celtics finishing last year 12-15 overall and 3-13 in the River States Conference. The Celtics landed third in the nation for the second year in a row at the USCAA championship tournament.

The AMCC coaches voted on rankings and selected preseason player of the year awards.

Heading into her 31st season, Head Coach Julie Gaul selected Rebecca Hess and Javonna Perkins as players to watch.

Hess was named to the 2022 USCAA Championship All-Tournament team and earned All-American honorable mention. Hess led the Celtics and was fifth in the USCAA with 252 kills on the season.

Perkins led Carlow with 63 blocks, was third in the USCAA with an average 0.70 blocks per set and also earned All-American second team honors for the Celtics.

The Penn State Behrend women's volleyball team was selected by league coaches to claim the 2023 AMCC women's volleyball title. Alfred State College, the 2022 AMCC champion, is expected to finish in second place, with Mount Aloysius College and Pitt-Bradford tying for the third spot in preseason rankings.

The AMCC Preseason Player of the Year is Penn State Behrend senior outside hitter Hannah Phillips. Phillips was the AMCC Co-Player of the Year in 2022. She ranked first in the AMCC in kills per set (3.45), total kills (359), and points per set (3.9), while also ranking sixth in attack percentage (.227). She recorded 13 double-doubles a season ago.

The AMCC Championship will be held November 12 at the site of the No. 1 seed, with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
