Women’s Volleyball picks up win over Penn State Shenango

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball swept Penn State Shenango in USCAA action at home Thursday night.

The win advanced the Celtics to 6-4 on the season and dropped the Nittany Lions to 1-8.

Rebecca Hess led Carlow with 12 kills on the night, while Claire Yezovich and Angel Klein combined for 23 digs.

Shenango jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the first set and kept Carlow on its heels until the Celtics strung together a 9-0 run to gain a 14-10 advantage.

Carlow hit .303 in the set to win, 26-16.

The Celtics led, 14-9, in the second set, but the Nittany Lions did not back down. Shenango battled back to within a point of tying the game, but Carlow once again put together a 5-1 run to lead, 23-18, en route to a 23-20 win.

Shenango led, 4-1, to start the third set, but the Celtics quickly tied the score, five-all.

Both teams tied the game several times, with Shenango gaining and holding a marginal lead over the Celtics through much of the set.

Carlow went on a short run to regain a 21-20 advantage, but a service ace tied the score once again at 21.

An attacking error by the Celtics gave Shenango a 23-21 lead, but back-to-back kills from Hess and Meghan Alexander tied it up.

Following a Nittany Lions time out, Shenango committed an error and Taylor Claypoole came through with the kill to win the set and the match for the Celtics.

Kiara Varion led the Nittany Lions with a double-double 10 kills and 10 digs. Emma Murdock, Kylee Loreno and Jill Dunleavy combined for over half of Shenango's digs on the night.

The Nittany Lions recorded seven service aces to Carlow's three.

The Celtics travel to Lycoming College Sept. 26 for a 7 p.m. match.
