Wells College edges past Women’s Volleyball in AMCC matchup

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball lost a 3-1 AMCC contest to Wells College inside St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center Saturday.

In an otherwise evenly matched game, it was the Express (10-10, 3-0 AMCC) who came out on top.

Javonna Perkins led the Celtics (8-11, 0-3 AMCC) with 18 kills and two solo blocks on the day.

Rebecca Hess and Megan Cooper tallied 14 and 11 kills respectively, and Meghan Alexander recorded a double-double with 47 assists and 16 digs. Gabby Serrao and Claire Yezovich added 10 digs apiece in the effort.

Wells hit .485 to take the first set, 25-21, but Carlow handled the Express expertly in the second set to even the score, 1-1.

The Celtics went on a 6-0 run to lead, 24-12, and although Wells attempted a comeback, the Celtics held on for a 25-16 win.

The Express jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in the third set and maintained a steady lead through the game. Carlow slowly chipped away at Wells' lead to tie the score, 22-all, after a big kill from Perkins.

The Express went ahead, 24-22, but back-to-back attacking errors once again tied the score and forced a win-by-two situation.

Wells came up with two kills to end the set, 26-24, and lead, 2-1.

The Express led, 11-3, in the fourth set, and although the Celtics attempted a comeback of their own with a late 6-0 run, Wells won, 25-20.

Marta Corral Cajigas and Miah Williamson both tallied 14 kills for the Express.

Carlow travels to Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m. AMCC game Oct. 17.
