Women’s Volleyball forces Pitt Greensburg to fifth set showdown

GREENSBURG, Pa. --- Carlow University women's volleyball lost another five-set thriller, this time to AMCC opponent Pitt Greensburg on the road Wednesday.

It was the first time all season the Bobcats (5-18, 2-5 AMCC) went to a fifth set.

Several athletes put up numbers for the Celtics (8-14, 0-6 AMCC), including Rebecca Hess who recorded another double-double with 16 kills and 23 digs.

Alison Humberston returned to action with 14 kills, and Javonna Perkins added the same.

Meghan Alexander had a double-double of her own with 44 assists and 22 digs, while Claire Yezovich contributed 21 digs.

Kelsey Sufak scored six of Carlow's nice service aces on the night.

The home team wasted no time jumping out to a 7-1 advantage to start the game.

With the Celtics trailing 20-15, it looked like Pitt Greensburg would put the game away, but kills from Perkins and Hess and back-to-back aces from Sufak brought Carlow up to speed.

The Celtics trailed close behind, forcing the game into a win-by-two situation.

Back-to-back kills from Humberston tied the game, 24-all, and a subsequent kill from Perkins gave Carlow its first lead of the set. An attacking error by the Bobcats handed Carlow the 26-24 win.

It was a back-and-forth game in the second set, but Carlow led 15-12 midway through. The Bobcats went on an 8-0 run to gain a 20-15 advantage. Despite Carlow making a 5-2 push at the end of the set, Pitt Greensburg came out on top, 25-21.

The teams tied the score and traded leads several times throughout the third set, but this time it was Carlow with the big 8-0 run to end the game, 25-19.

The fourth set played out much like the third, and without a lot of long runs on either side. At the end, Pitt Greensburg led, 24-21, but back-to-back kills from Hess brought Carlow to within a point. The set ended on a Carlow service error, 25-23, in favor of the Bobcats.

It was another battle in the fifth and final set, and once again it came down to a photo finish. Another Carlow service error ended the game and the match, 15-13, in favor of the Bobcats.

Madison Friess had a game-high 26 kills, 27 digs, two aces and three solo blocks to lead Pitt Greensburg.

The Celtics host Pitt Bradford for a 3 p.m. game Saturday. Prior to the game, Carlow will celebrate Senior Day to honor its seven seniors.
