Women’s Volleyball swept by neighboring Chatham
PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball fell in three sets to Fifth Ave. foe Chatham University at home Thursday night.
The Cougars (3-6) defeated the Celtics 25-16, 25-17 and 25-15.
Rebecca Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) led Carlow with 11 kills and Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) contributed 15 assists. Javonna Perkins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) tallied three blocks and Kelsey Sufak (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes HS) added eight digs in the effort.
It was slow going through the first set, as both teams kept within one or two points of one another until the end. Chatham outscored Carlow 5-2 to take a 21-15 lead before the Celtics (4-6) called a timeout.
A kill from Rebecca Hess was Carlow's final score of the set, as an attacking error and a Chatham kill ended the game, 25-16.
The Celtics scored three quick points to begin the second set, heading to an 8-2 lead early on. The Cougars clawed back to trail by one but kills from Paige Keller (Liberty Borough, Pa./South Allegheny HS) and Emily Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./River Valley HS) kept Carlow out front.
A Carlow service error and a subsequent Chatham ace tied the game at 14-all before a Carlow attacking error handed the Cougars their first lead of the set.
Chatham outscored Carlow 6-1 to lead 23-16 enroute to a 25-17 second set victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the third set before two kills from Rebecca Hess and a Chatham error saw the Celtics trailing by one.
Once again, the Cougars went on a 6-1 run, gaining a 21-13 advantage. A kill put Chatham ahead, 23-15, and back-to-back attacking errors by the Celtics ended the set and the match, 25-15.
Zoie Bateman and Becca Gesner led Chatham with nine kills apiece. Ava Plunkard added nine digs, 14 assists and six aces. Gesner and Paige Watson tallied four blocks each.
The Cougars recorded 11 service aces and hit .286 as a team on the night.
Carlow travels to Penn State Shenango for a 7 p.m. match Sept. 23.
