Women’s Volleyball swept by Grove City in nonconference road match

The Wolverines (8-7) defeated the Celtics (5-7) 25-12, 25-21 and 25-19.
Alison Humberston (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands HS) led Carlow with nine kills on the night, while Rebecca Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) added 12 digs and seven kills. Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) and Emily Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./River Valley HS) tallied 11 assists apiece, and Javonna Perkins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) added three blocks.
Grove City recorded 14 service aces in the match.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the first set and later went on an 8-2 run to extend that lead to 16-6 enroute to a decisive 25-12 victory.
Carlow fared better in the second set, as both teams tied the score nine times and traded marginal leads until the very end. Back-to-back kills from Perkins saw the Celtics trailing 21-20 before two errors and a kill by the Wolverines gave them a 24-20 advantage. A bad set handed Carlow a point before another service error ended the second set 25-21 in favor of the home team.
The Celtics attempted a comeback in the third set where they went on a 12-5 run to gain a 16-14 lead midway through the game.
Grove City scored five points in a row to regain the lead as the Celtics stayed within range. A kill from Jorja Sedlar (Brentwood, Pa./PA Leadership Charter School) put Carlow within one, but the Wolverines took advantage of several Carlow errors, a kill and an ace to end the set and the match on a 5-0 run.
Lila Stonehouse led Grove City with 11 kills and three blocks, and Julia Fisher put up 15 digs on the night.
The Celtics host St. Vincent College for a 7 p.m. match as part of Carlow's Homecoming Weekend Friday, Sept. 27.
