Women’s Volleyball swept by La Roche in AMCC matchup

The Celtics (6-12, 0-2 AMCC) took the Redhawks (10-6, 2-1 AMCC) to a win-by-two set, falling 26-24, and La Roche won the next two sets, 25-15.
Alison Humberston (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands HS) led Carlow with 10 kills. Kelsey Sufak (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes HS) added 11 digs, and Javonna Perkins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) tallied three blocks. Emily Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./River Valley HS) and Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) combined for 27 assists.
Both teams tied the game and traded leads through the beginning of the first set. The Celtics trailed, 21-14, before a La Roche setting error catalyzed a 5-0 run for Carlow that culminated in a Redhawks timeout.
A subsequent Carlow attack error prompted Head Coach Julie Gaul to call a timeout of her own, with the Celtics capitalizing on a kill to staying within two points.
Carlow trailed, 24-21, but two La Roche errors kept the Celtics in the game, and a kill from Humberston tied the set at 24-all. Following a Redhawks timeout, two Carlow errors in a row handed La Roche the 26-24 win.
The Celtics started out leading the second set, but La Roche strung together a few runs to secure the victory. The Redhawks, trailing 4-3, went on a 9-2 run to gain a 12-6 advantage. La Roche pushed its lead to 20-13 with a 6-2 run later in the set enroute to a 25-15 win.
Both teams landed just eight kills apiece in the third set, with the Redhawks jumping out to a 6-1 lead to start.
A 9-3 run gave La Roche a 19-10 lead, and although the Celtics continued to fight, the Redhawks won the third set 25-15.
Kalli Grine led La Roche with a game-high 11 kills, Mackenzie Kerkan had 17 digs and three service aces, and Kylie Fehlman recorded six blocks.
The Celtics host Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m. "Pink Out" match Oct. 22.
