PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball lost a 3-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match to visiting Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon.
The Celtics (6-15, 0-5 AMCC) fell, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19 to the Lions (9-16, 3-2 AMCC)
Prior to the match, Carlow honored senior Alison Humberston (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands HS), who led the Celtics with a game-high 18 kills. Rebecca Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, and Emily Hess (New Alexandria, Pa./River Valley HS) added 17 assists in the effort.
Although each team tied the game several times through the first set, Carlow led much of the game. Behrend's first lead of the set came from a Carlow service error, but the Celtics quickly tied the score once again at 16-all after a Lions error.
Back-to-back aces from Sydney Petko gave the Lions a 22-21 advantage until Sarah Porter (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) landed a kill to tie the game.
A kill and an error put Behrend ahead 24-22 as the team called a timeout following a kill from Humberston that cut the lead to one. Behrend struck the final kill to win the set, 25-23.
It was another back and forth battle through the second set as well, with the Lions going on a 5-1 run to lead, 14-11, prompting a Carlow timeout.
Trailing 23-20, a Behrend service error and a kill from Rebecca Hess saw the Celtics down one. Unfortunately, two Carlow errors in a row handed the second set to the Lions, 25-22.
The Celtics led through the beginning of the third set, with the Lions eventually gaining the lead on a Carlow attack error. It was short-lived, when Humberston landed a kill to tie the game at 11-all.
Behrend strung together a 7-2 run to lead, 19-13, and the Lions maintained the lead through the game, ahead 23-15. Humberston landed three kills and a Behrend attack error saw the Celtics down five. A Lions kill and a Carlow error handed Behrend the set and match point, 25-19.
Cadence Jones led the Lions with 15 kills and 11 digs, and Sara Nobach added 15 digs. Jones also tallied six of Behrend's 11 service aces on the day.
