Bio

George Sliman began his third season as an assistant coach in 2024, but he is certainly no stranger to Carlow Volleyball and Carlow Athletics.

Sliman began his career at Carlow as an assistant volleyball coach in 1984 and became head coach in 1988 where his teams went 265-211 over 12 seasons.

In 1999 he became the Director of Athletics and served in that capacity for 22 years until his retirement in 2021. During that time, the sport offerings grew from five women’s teams and 60 student-athletes to 16 teams - nine women’s and seven men’s - and nearly 200 student-athletes.

At his retirement, the University honored his accomplishments by naming the Athletics’ offices the “Sliman Administrative Offices.”

He is a USAVA CAP Level II Volleyball Coach and is a Certified Setter Coach. He has also served off and on as a Certified Referee over his volleyball career.

Having worked together at Carlow for over 30 years, he and Head Coach Julie Gaul have developed a unique coaching chemistry which results in a quality academic and athletic experience for the team.

“Julie and I have a similar philosophy from different perspectives. It’s the different perspectives that allow us to analyze situations and arrive at the best solutions, aimed at the best outcomes for our student-athletes on and off the court. Coaching together is still fun, and that’s important for our athletes!”
